Noel Hamiel

Noel Hamiel wants to be remembered as a newspaperman, a fitting tribute after a 35-year career that began with an epiphany.

Hamiel attended Northern State University with plans to become an English teacher. He proceeded to teach for a year before switching to the newspaper industry after realizing that was a better fit. It is here where he thrived. He started out as a sportswriter for the Huron Plainsman and eventually worked for the Brookings Register, Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, The Morning Sun in Pittsburg, Kan., the Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan, the Cincinnati Post and The Daily Republic of Mitchell, where he retired in 2007.

After retirement, he served in the South Dakota Legislature for one term from 2008 to 2010. He has won numerous awards for editorial and column writing and was also inducted into the South Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame. He was also the president of the South Dakota Associated Press Managing Editors group twice and served on the SDNA board of directors.
